“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”
Thomas Merton, No Man is an Island
The simplicity of this quote encapsulates, for me, a profound validation of my
process and appreciation of art.
I have always enjoyed the creative flow that dry media offer. The expressive
range of tonal values enables my working ever deeper into an absorbing
partnership with the paper or surface qualities.
Whilst my ‘go to’ medium has for a long time been charcoal, I have been
exploring the world of colour with pastels. Their rich, often intensely saturated
chroma is a joy to build images with; then discovering techniques to liquify the
pigments has moved me into other realms of painterly effects.
It is all fascinating and freeing to develop. However, perhaps my feet (and
fingers!) will always be rooted in the achromatic world that graphite and
charcoal afford. I like to switch between the two. Choices to explore other
media and techniques lie ahead…
Much of my work draws inspiration from my original Dorset Jurassic Coast
roots and many years living in the Cotswolds.
