Pauline Chidlaw
I am a Textile Artist working mainly with machine embroidery and hand rolled felt.
My work is usually inspired by the natural world, my garden being a constant source of inspiration. Some work is purely decorative, some functional.
My machine embroidered collages invariably begin with white or natural coloured fabric. I use different techniques to produce interesting, colourful and textural backgrounds. Other fabrics are dyed and used to build up the elements of the collage. I use my sewing machine like a pencil or paint brush to add line and colour.
Felt making is a magical experience and being able to create my own fabric is a great thrill. I will often combine felt with machine embroidery. I love the way machine embroidery enhances the textural surface of hand rolled felt, while the felt provides a wonderfully receptive surface to embroider on.
I was originally a Primary School teacher and have, since retirement, continued to teach and share my love of textiles with people of all ages and abilities.
