Leaf & Ground

Claire is almost an exclusively a landscape painter. She studied at University of West of England and has a degree in illustration. She lives deep in Gloucestershire landscape for over 37 years. Her locality informs her work. Painting in a traditional way both landscapes and woodlands that surrounds her home, ensuring the onlooker can recognise the view. She considers each composition and to get the best out of every painting. Using a bit of artistic licence or exaggeration to do so. On occasions she’s painted the same view several times. The time of year and the weather, light and colours bringing a new fascination to the landscape and composition. She starts by drawing on the spot. To immerse herself in her locality. She also photographs for secondary reference as well as making notes as to the weather, colours and atmosphere. Acrylic paint is her favourite medium. She uses canvases or a hot-pressed watercolour paper. Using Acrylic paint in thin layers she builds up the composition. By doing so It allows her to increase the detail as she completes the painting. Her main aim is to make the onlooker engaged themselves in the painting and feel they’re present in the view.
